Google provides a series of free tools which you can use for research purposes. One of these tools is called Google Trends. Google Trends enables you to compare internet search words which can be further filtered by: country, state, region, years and/or languages. As an example, I wanted to know which of the US candidates was searched more through the interent? McCain or Obama?

In the google search trend box, I simply type: ‘McCain, obama’ and vouloir… the results display on a graph. You can then filter by country to see which candiente is more popular in which countries. On the right hand side of the graph you can see legend links to popular news stories. Although this particular search is not relevant to small – medium size business, it is a very good demonstration of how powerful this tool can be.

Example for small – medium size business might want to research words, products and/or brands to sell? Compare the brands against each other to see which is more popular? Pepsi or coke? gift certificate or gift voucher, beauty salons or day spas?

go try yourself, play around with it!
